About the book
The Tender Bar
J. R. Moehringer grew up longing for the father who disappeared from his life before he could know him. Searching for models of manhood and belonging, he found them at a neighborhood bar in Manhasset, Long Island, where a colorful group of regulars became an unconventional extended family. In this memoir, Moehringer recounts his childhood, his relationship with his mother, his education, early adulthood, and his attempts to understand identity, ambition, family, and what it means to become a man.
